Transition

The following images were photographed in Washington, DC between January 19th-21st 2017, the weekend that Donald Trump was sworn in as president of the United States. It was a time that encompassed vastly different hopes for a divided nation.

The story before you is not exactly breaking news. This collection features events and spaces that were documented by hundreds of photographers and thousands of smart phones. They are not for the glorification or demonization of any single idea, movement, or party.

This is a look at the coming to grips with a new national reality, both structurally and socially. In a period of heightened polarity and friction, how do we respond? Grieving, fighting, or celebrating this presidential transition, what does it look like to work out our democracy?

The first amendment ensures the right to gather. The election of the 45th president of the United States saw a spectrum of reactions ranging from apathy to rage. In the face of political victory or defeat, our human instinct is often to be together, to stand for, to move forward.

Transition is a consideration of the human moments that make us more than crowds, more than opinions, more than Facebook debates. The built symbolism of Washington as capitol of the most powerful free society in the world provides a unique backdrop. You will see both fear and hope in this space of concrete and limestone.
